So I was looking up the meaning of gas masks in art and literature etc. and I think I came to the perfect conclusion:

the gas masks represent fear, a reoccurring theme in twenty one pilots’ songs, band, and especially the album, Blurryface.

The hazmat suits and gas masks represent a fear of getting beaten down, but a willingness to fight on. Even if it means facing our fears head on (ie: getting gassed) I think that this represents Lane Boy as a whole because the song is about challenging the status quo and not being afraid to go where you want to |-/
